March 7, 2014 Victoria Leigh Soto
On December 14, 2012, Victoria Soto hid many of her children in a closet in her classroom after Sandy Hook Elementary School was besieged by a lone heavily armed gun man. The man entered her classroom and she said the students were elsewhere. When the scared students tried to flee from their hiding places, the gun man began shooting. Victoria then used her own body to shield her students and was shot and killed by the gun man. She and five other adult victims from the school were awarded Presidential Citizen's Medal on February 15, 2013. Victoria was doing what teachers do: protecting the children in her charge; keeping them as safe as humanly possible. Teaching as a feminist act. Thank you Victoria. |
