More birds keep appearing...

Gathering
(currently in process)
watercolor, graphite, acrylic, and colored pencil on paper
42" x 60"
This is a painting that I am working on for a show in April at the Mayo Street Arts in Portland, Maine: Dr. Goodweather's Dreaming Attic. Things keep showing up in the painting: eyes, birds, cages, bones, hearts, plants, eggs and a large ghost bird.  Appropriate, I suppose as it named itself "Gathering."  I had little to do with who is showing up here.  I am just the conduit.  I am just the painter.  I am the dreamer.

I just hope they will all stay long enough for the show in April.

The Love Windows...

"You be the king who digs me and I will forever be  your queen of hearts."
working prototype/ sketch of interactive puppet windows
This little prototype is fragile and still in process but it will be going down to the Meg Perry Center for the Secret City of the Absent Sane show, opening this First Friday. It is VERY crude and I want feedback and information on what works and doesn't work about it.

I am wondering how easily it will break (or not)? What is about it that draws or repels the viewer? What more (or less) does it need?  Does the story need to be interactive?  Is it interactive enough?

If you wander into the show (and I hope you will) I'd love to know what you think. If you are not at the show and are looking at it online, I'd still like to know what works or doesn't about this little foray into puppetry.

Thanks!

End of the year bits...

I am trying to work on several things at once today in the studio and not really succeeding at any of them.  My mind is scattered and I don't want to focus.

I have been cutting out choice phrases from a trashy novel for the narrative for my Sketchbook Project piece.  Always an amusing thing to do.  Now to place them into the pages of my drawings.

I have 32 small pieces of paper prepped for my Fun-A-Day.  I intend to create small assemblages with a daily found object and an illustration of the nexus of a word a day and that found object.  We'll see what comes of it.

Currently, the follow three paintings are occupying my studio walls.   They are mixed media pieces using pastel, watercolor, graphite and acrylic paint on paper.  I have a fourth paper waiting to have an image ready to go as well.

Here's to hoping that the new year will be a productive and happy one.  I'll be sending Monday evening painting and dancing with my sweetie hoping that it will seep into the deep recesses of 2013.

Pushing the image with a blade

For now I am going to continue making both at least one paper doll and one drawing per day.  Perhaps these endeavors won't be as publicly executed as they have in the past, but I feel like I can't stop.

I need to push the dolls to whatever it is they are worming themselves into down deep in my psyche.  They are trying to say...I am trying to say something with this media and I can't quite figure it out yet.  Perhaps I want to push all the saccharine out of the imagery of the dolls and have them be something else...something stronger and slightly menacing.

I have continued drawing but it is private and perhaps not as focused.  I pull images from last years crops of drawings to hone down further and finer...waiting for when they will be ready for the larger page...ready for more time.

These paper dolls have forced me to think in terms of pattern and composition.  The lines that the scissors cut are more a a commitment than the line that the pencil scribes.  This forces me to visualized the doll before it is done, which is something I don't have to do while drawing or even painting.  This is good for now.

And for now Rabbit Rabbit.
